Your home is supposed to be a safe space, but criminals do not care. If you have something they want, and they find it easy to get into your home, they may try to break in and take whatever they want. If you want to protect your home from potential theft, check out these three tips to keep your home safe and secure.
1. Add Some External Lighting
Darkness is every criminal's friend because it give them a place to hide while they figure out exactly how they will get into your home. If your yard is dark at night, install some external lighting.
Motion detector lights are one popular option because they activate if someone approaches your home. The shock of suddenly being in bright light may be enough to make the criminal leave. At the very least, it will make it harder for them to sneak around unnoticed by you, neighbors, or police.
Floodlights are another option to consider, and they come with or without motion detectors. Regardless of which type you use, floodlights are used for brightening up big areas, such as your entire front yard.
2. Update Old Exterior Doors
Exterior doors let you into your home, but they should be secure and strong enough to keep out anyone trying to break in. With external doors, you have three main ones to consider: traditional pivoting doors (like front doors), automatic garage doors, and sliding glass doors.
Older pivoting doors may begin to pull away from the frame, which may make it easier to kick down the door. These doors also tend to have easy-to-pick standard tumbler locks. Exterior doors should also be solid wood or strong steel, unlike interior doors, which are hollow and can easily be broken.
Your garage door also needs to be secure and durable. Weak, damaged garages, especially those with thin wood, may be easy to break through. Automatic garage openers that have not been properly maintained may prevent the door from fully shutting.
Last, sliding glass doors, which are often used as back doors, are incredibly easy to break into. If you do not have adequate locks, someone could literally rock the door off the track to fully remove it and enter your home. To protect your sliding glass door, make sure the glass is strong, and have multiple locks.
3. Install a Surveillance System
If you want to take home security to the next level, a surveillance system is often your best option. The cameras alone may scare away potential thieves who don't want to be caught, but even if they still try or do break into your home, the cameras will have it all on tape so you can easily identify the criminal and use the video as evidence against them.
Surveillance systems are also great if you travel a lot. Thanks to advancements in technology, many systems allow you to monitor the cameras from your phone. So even when you are across the country, you can monitor what happens at home.
The biggest drawback to a surveillance system is the cost, and you have no guarantee the cameras will stop theft because they cannot physically stop criminals. However, because a security system will detour criminals and make it easier to catch any criminals, you will not have to worry about easily losing money from theft.
Keeping your home secure is mostly about making it unattractive to criminals. Criminals are often attracted to homes with lots of dark spots, no security system/surveillance system, and poorly maintained doors. If you want to better protect your home, contact us at All Pro Security, Inc., today.
